Groomer / Manager ~ Nickie

Nickie Hudspeth

Welcome to Uptown Woofs!

My name is Nickie and I have been grooming and showing dogs for forty years. My family has been in the professional pet industry for three generations and now my daughter is the fourth generation to be in this wonderfully rewarding business.

Through the years, I have been involved in running my family’s kennels, training dogs to compete in conformation shows, grooming the dogs for show, pet grooming and selling dog related retail. I groomed in the same St Louis community for 17 years and for 9 of those years I owned my own shop.

I specialize in hand scissor cuts and working with dogs that have issues. Grooming a dog takes both trust and respect. Neither of those things can be had by bullying, muzzling or drugging. The only things that work  are trying to figure out why the dog is behaving the way he or she is behaving, patience and time. There have been times when it required more than one grooming appointment to finish a frustrated or scared animal’s grooming,  but that’s ok. If it  takes multiple appointments  to keep from stressing your pet out, I am more than happy to do so. With a little extra TLC, before you know it, your dog will be excited to come see us and drag you in the door, instead of back to the car.

For friendly, outgoing, non-aggressive dogs who’s health is not compromised, I run an open-shop. The cage-less approach allows the dogs to roam within the secured grooming area having fun and meeting new friends, but still be under our constant supervision. For the less outgoing and fragile, I have very large crates available for them to hang out in right next to us until their ride comes to pick them up.. We try to schedule dogs with issues first thing in the morning or late in the day, getting him or her in and out more quickly to minimize stress on the dog and the owner. In extreme cases we can do a private grooming after business hours which may result in extra charges.

Your dog’s health is important to us and I will become a critical part of your dog’s health plan. With every visit we will look at skin, coat, teeth, paws etc. checking for possible health issues. If I find anything that is cause for concern, we will  let you know immediately  so you can take the appropriate action to keep your pet healthy and happy.

As difficult as it was to make the decision to leave my customers after 17 wonderful years, it was time for a change. San Diego is such a friendly,  beautiful city and it has been my dream for quite some time to relocate here. I am excited and looking forward to taking care of your dogs for many years to come.

Oh… I guess I can check moving to San Diego and opening a grooming shop off my bucket list!
